2016 - Hypponen’s Law: "Whenever an appliance is described as being ‘smart’, it’s vulnerable"

Today - news: Cisco researchers find security leaks in smart airfrier, allowing remote code execution.

Oh yes, Cisco told the manufacturer, Cosori, about the leaks on december 21st. But it isn't fixed, so they now made the details public. Happy hacking 😅!

A new open access publication by Carissa Véliz: Moral zombies: why algorithms are not moral agents.

link.springer.com/article/10.1

"When algorithms cause moral havoc, as they often do, we must look to the human beings who designed, programmed, commissioned, implemented, and were supposed to supervise them to assign the appropriate blame. For all their complexity and flair, algorithms are nothing but tools, and moral agents are fully responsible for the tools they create and use."

NGOs urge EU legislators to ban unlawful tracking in online advertising. Great idea to mitigate !

“This is a terrific opportunity to install privacy by default in the online world. (...) We have the opportunity to create an internet that better serves users by stopping built in data harvesting and tracing methods. It’s important that the European Parliament realises it can stand up for people, and not defend the interests of the big tech platforms.”

Did you already ?

I, too, call on the European Commission to strictly regulate the use of biometric technologies in order to avoid undue interference with fundamental rights.

World bank report: Data for better lives

blogs.worldbank.org/opendata/w

"Data is a powerful weapon in the fight against poverty—one that can potentially transform the lives of poor people. But it’s also a double-edged sword. New rules of the road are called for—a social contract for data—to get more value out of data while protecting people against harm and ensuring access and representation."

There is a lot of work to do.

We could start by banning trading in personal data :)

"Data is het nieuwe uranium" - Mikko Hyppönen, 5-3-2021

Misschien kan iemand ze 'Privacy is Power' van Carissa Véliz opsturen?

De Correspondent goes with this brilliant article about .

"The discussion about Big Tech is often about privacy, surveillance, disinformation and abuse of power. These are legitimate concerns. But this ignores the fact that Big Tech creates a new infrastructure that society cannot do without."

An inspiring message from an inspiring scientist:
youtube.com/watch?v=ajQz7RxGST

"Out in the forest you learn about the interconnection of all the forms of life, how every little species of animal and plant in the forest has a role to play."

Until recently I lived on the campus of the University of Twente, where my home was surrounded by trees. That was actually the reason why I chose :-) It was great to be able to start forest walks and runs from my doorstep!

A good day for getting inspiration! Listening to podcasts while running and then attending !

During my run I stumbled upon this beautiful house, and the owner took the time to share its history! The wood is from a farm that was built in 1746!

Now attending TEDxTwenteU! An amazing talk by Linda Radestad. And later Cristina Zaga, with "Social technology is not good, bad, or neutral, but it must be feminist and responsible".
