I'm back with a bagpipe recommendation! 20 year old piper Brìghde Chaimbeul's debut album The Reeling contains a collection on Scottish folk tunes (and some Bulgarian ones, apparently?) that sound grand yet intimate, and as modern as traditional bagpipe can sound.
@janboddez Agreed on that rating... I'm not sure when Death Cab recorded their last good album, but it definitely was before last year.
@hiemstra That would definitely be a great option! As things are currently looking, I will most likely begin my Masters in Data Science & Technology next summer. So it is looking into the future quite a bit, but I would definitely be interested to work on this for a PhD!
In the category "underrated stuff from 2016", the record Jet Plane and Oxbow by Shearwater. An album that starts out with an electronic post-punk sound and gradually grows more and more acoustic as it continues, with very Bowie-esque vocals. #indie #music
@hiemstra Problems like these are the main reason I am considering a career in machine learning - we are toying with technology we don't fully control, yet it is being advertised as a miracle cure-all. I would love to work on improving our understanding of our AI someday in the future.
If you're keeping up with #indie music, you probably don't need me to tell you this, but don't sleep on Better Oblivion Community Center! Wonderful indie folk collaboration between veteran Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes and relative newcomer Phoebe Bridgers. The best part on this record are definitely the harmonies between the two!
Abandonnée/Maléja: a wonderfully dark and hypnotic bagpipe/hurdy-gurdy drone album that serves as a great soundtrack for all your void-staring needs. https://lesdisquesbongojoe.bandcamp.com/album/abandonn-e-maleja
