After Huawei employees are banned from IEEE peer-reviewing process, Professor Haixia Zhang from Peking University has written to IEEE to resign from the editorial board. The ban is too much for people who believe that IEEE was international (pic from https://t.co/J9p5MDVgzd) https://t.co/E85EudD9DH
The normal Twitter's API only retrieves about 1% of all available tweets. Although you can retrieve the whole Twitter's timeline with with a special Twitter's API called Firehose, but it is super expensive and only available to a few companies. In this document, Jason Baumgartner mathematically shows the feasibility of reconstructing 99% of Firehose. He also urges the researchers to join forces and collect Twitter's data and make that data available to all researchers.
Unbelievable. The Cryptographer’s Panel at @RSAConference@twitter.com 2019 is missing Adi Shamir (the “S” in RSA), who was unable to secure a US visa.
Adi in a video to #RSAC: “Perhaps it's time we rethink the question of how and where we organize our major scientific conference."
"TLDR: You can sniff BitLocker keys in the default config, ... TPM1.2 or TPM2.0 device, using a dirt cheap FPGA (~$40NZD) and now publicly available code,.... After sniffing, you can decrypt the drive. Don’t want to be vulnerable ...? Enable additional pre-boot authentication."
"Does dropping (malicious) USB drives in parking lots and other places really work?"
297 samples were dropped, 290 got picked up. 135 people opened documents (HTML pinger), 54 flash drives got returned.
20% were opened within the first hour. In less than 5 hours half of the devices were used by someone.

Although Elsevier hasn't come around yet, Wiley made an #OpenAccess publishing deal with Germany. Sounds interesting, the universities essentially pay for publishing services but all their authors' works will be available. It includes launching a new journal too. I haven't read through the details but this sounds really positive at first glance. https://www.hrk.de/press/press-releases/press-release/meldung/wiley-and-projekt-deal-partner-to-enhance-the-future-of-scholarly-research-and-publishing-in-germany/

I was invited to consult a European research project called Eunomia. The project aims to implement a web of trust system for the spread of news in social networks, and I will be advising them on how their system can work with decentralized social networks, and Mastodon in particular. I'll also be doing community outreach, since at some point we'll need volunteers for trying it out.
The kick-off meeting is in January, in London. I bought the tickets today. Excited & equally terrified.
The social network of the future: No ads, no corporate surveillance, ethical design, and decentralization! Own your data with Mastodon! Anyone with an @utwente.nl or @*.utwente.nl email address can create an account on mastodon.utwente.nl.
